Multi-level marketing (MLM) is a fraudulent business practice. Its clients are pressured into abusing their relatives, friends and aquaintances by forcing products and services down their throats which they would never have bought themselves; but buy anyway in order to avoid a conflict with their relative, friend or aquaintance. MLM clients are pressured into becoming unpaid salespersons and into themselves recruiting as many unpaid salespersons for the pyramid scheme (‘ Ponzi‘) corporations as possible. According to the United States Federal Trade Commission, at least 99% of people who join MLM companies lose money.

Probably the best known MLM corporation is Amway. It is often described as a (pseudo-)religious cult (with fundamentalist Christian undertones) rather than a bona fide business.

Amway profits are the cause of the fortunes of Donald Trump’s Secretary of Miseducation Betsy DeVos; and of her brother Erik Prince, of the Blackwater paramilitary mercenaries’ corporation.

The U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of New York announced on Tuesday that Bronfman – along with NXIVM founder Keith Raniere, former “Smallville” actress Allison Mack, Kathy Russell, Lauren Salzman and Nancy Salzman – have been indicted on charges of “racketeering conspiracy involving an array of crimes, including identity theft, extortion, forced labor, sex trafficking, money laundering, wire fraud and obstruction of justice.”

Bronfman was scheduled to be arraigned later on Tuesday afternoon in Brooklyn. Though Raniere and Mack were charged in April with sex trafficking and forced labor conspiracy, the unsealing of the indictment on Tuesday marked the first time prosecutors had charged Bronfman, a member of NXIVM’s executive board; Russell, NXIVM’s former bookkeeper; Lauren Salzman, a member of NXIVM’s executive board.

It was initially assumed that, if this were true [and the sisters had no reason to doubt the veracity of Keith Raniere, for he was their mentor {and the smartest man in the world} who wanted only their good] that Pater Bronfman did so because he did not like Keith Raniere having undue influence over his daughters, and wanted him discredited at any price. …

The idea of past lives, of reincarnation, is present in several religions, like Buddhism and Hinduism. However, claims to know about living people what their past lives were (or what their future lives will be) are typical for members of the Theosophical Society, founded in 1875 in New York City, and of later tendencies influenced by it, rather than for Hindus or Buddhists. Eg, prominest Theosophical Society member Charles Webster Leadbeater claimed to know a lot about living individuals’ reincarnations.

So, apparently, Keith Raniere, though he got his start in Multi Level Marketing from Amway religious right Christians, preaches non-Christian reincarnation. A bit similar to the Church of Scientology, also saying they know people’s past lives. Not the only parallel betwen Scientology and NXIVM (also in financially exploiting and abusing (ex-)adherents):

Starting with an October 2017 article in The New York Times, details began to emerge about DOS, a “secret sisterhood” within NXIVM, in which female members were referred to as “ slaves“, branded with the initials of Raniere and Mack, subject to corporal punishment from their “masters”, and had to provide nude photos or other potentially damaging information about themselves as “collateral.”

Yet another sinister side of NXIVM (probably, there are far more than would fit in this relatively short blog post): their role in the 2011 NATO war on Libya; based on lies; the start of bloodbaths which continue today; which turned out to be a catastrophe for Libyan women; which brought the end of the availability of life-saving medicines; which brought the return of slavery, abolished in 19th century Libya before the USA or the Dutch colonies abolished it.

According to the Wikipedia biography of Ms Sara Bronfman, financial victim of but now also leading member of NXIVM, she went to Libya in 2011 and married ‘new brave Libyan’ businessman Basit Iglet. She is President of the US-Libya Chamber of Commerce, and of the Canada-Libya Chamber of Commerce; organisations helping rich North American corporations and a few Libyan businessmen and warlords to get even richer while the Libyan people die of warfare, disease and hunger.

The United States has a broken criminal justice system. We have over 2 million people in jail, more than any other nation on earth, and they are disproportionately African-American, Latino, and Native American. We spend $80 billion a year keeping people behind bars, money which could be used for education, job creation and affordable housing.

The decision to put someone behind bars should never be decided based on how much money a person has, or what kind of mood the judge is in on a given day, or even what judge the case happens to come before. In a country where we pride ourselves on the principle “innocent until proven guilty,” we should not be keeping hundreds of thousands of people locked up before they have actually been convicted of a crime simply because they can’t afford bail.

Those who can’t afford bail, even when they are innocent, face punishments that could impact them for the rest of their lives. After spending weeks in jail, many lose their jobs and have trouble finding new work after they are released. With a loss of income, they aren’t able to pay their rent and may find themselves homeless. They may even lose custody of their children. And they were not guilty of any crime other than being poor.
