Ocean energy – wave energy scotland funds new controls projects – renewable energy magazine, at the heart of clean energy journalism

SgurrControl will bring their extensive experience of on and off-shore wind developments and work with Cruz Atcheson Consulting Engineering on the first project. They were awarded £187,409 ($262,800). Their Integrated Marine Point Absorber Control Tool (IMPACT) project aims to develop software tools to make the design and implementation of advanced control systems for point absorber type wave energy converters quicker and easier. By doing so, the cost of design of the WECs will be reduced as control can be easily factored in early in the design process to help inform mechanical and electrical design.

MaxSim’s winning submission builds on experience from several key Scottish wave energy companies and was awarded £187,500 ($263,000).


This project considers the application of reinforcement learning (RL) to the control of wave energy converters. RL uses experience to map actions to outcomes, and develops a control policy that maximizes long-term rewards.

The final project to be selected was from Queen Mary University, London who will work with University of Exeter and Mocean Energy from Edinburgh. Their team was awarded £151,304 ($212,000). This project proposes a hierarchical adaptive optimal control framework to maximize wave energy conversion efficiency while guaranteeing safe operation for a large range of sea states. The framework combines the strengths of several key promising technologies in control and wave prediction to adaptively achieve the best trade-off between energy maximization and survivability .

The control system for a wave energy converter is an essential sub-component and can constitute a complex piece of technology. Computer simulations and state of the art technologies can be married to create a new approach for controlling wave energy converters.

My work is not State Sponsored. Because of financial constraints, I could not test my second technology, in deep sea. My second technology is scale-able and it is possible to run a single large generator of 100MWs. My Technologies are: 1) Near Shore Technology. With this technology, it is possible to tap, the energy present in the waves, near to the coast, in depths of about five to ten meters. (It is said that, 4 feet 10 second waves striking the coast have about 26MWs of power per mile). Here the units, stand on the Ocean Floor. My first video shows, a single unit generating Power. Hundreds or thousands of these units, can be placed, singly or in rows of two or more, and all the mechanical energy, that is tapped by the individual units, is brought to one point, to run a single large generator. This Technology is ideal, where Coastal erosion is a serious problem. Wave energy in uninhabited remote areas could be tapped with this technology, to feed the Grid. 2) Deep Sea Technology. With this technology, it is possible to tap Ocean Wave Energy in deep seas, where depths of about 100 feet, to any extent are present. It is ideal to tap this energy, just a few Kilometers from the shore, so as to minimize the transmission losses. With this Technology, it is possible to run a single large generator of 100MWs or more. This Technology does not affect Fishing industry. The efficiency of the plant could be over 90%. Marine life, is not affected, in any way. Ocean floor is not disturbed, what so ever with this Plant. However, anchoring the entire plant may be required during storms and cyclones. I being a medical Doctor, it is natural for you to have apprehension. You can trust me and together, hand in hand we can tap Ocean Wave Energy. Sea Water is 832 times denser than air. Obviously, the energy that it carries is enormous. I request you to consider the benefits compared to coal based Thermal Power Plant. Advantages of Ocean Wave Energy Compared to Coal Based Thermal Power Generation. (Compared because most of the Power generated is through Coal—41% Globally). · Only Installation costs, No land acquisition for the construction of the Project. · No Fuel costs. · No Transportation costs. · No Internal Power Consumption in the Plant. (Normally, about 9% and in inefficient power plants 20% or more of the power generated, is used to run the auxiliary power plant equipment). · No Pollution. No Global Warming. · No Radio-active fall-out. (A coal based thermal Power Plant releases more Radio-active material than a Nuclear Power Plant). · No Fuel Stocks needed. No fear of accidental Fuel burn-out. No Carbon-monoxide poisoning. No Over-all Fuel losses of 10%. · No Effluents. No land destruction. · No Health Hazards. No Gestation Period.
