Here’s how I look at it, with my kids mostly through it. Does anyone pay attention to results or performance in JVA/B soccer? in my experience, no one outside of the kids on the team and the parents of the kids. In our area, they aren’t recorded anywhere, they are basically lost as soon as the game is over. So there is no incentive for a coach to optimize soccer performance except his or her own competitiveness. Now the coaches are probably competitive, and they probably like soccer or they wouldn’t be coaching, even the teacher JV coach. On the flip side, they get paid very little, and if they are in the soccer community, they make most of whatever money they get from soccer in club. In the HS community, if they want to keep coaching, and especially if they want to move up the ranks, getting along with the AD, the varsity coach, the principal, and other longtime program supporters is way more important than anything specific about the soccer performance.

So it has always seemed to me that at the JV level the incentives to care more about soccer performance over other things just aren’t there.

I can assure you that all of the HS Coaches I know are taking the best players on their teams no matter where or even if they play club. We have been accused of playing politics in the past (taking local club kids over big club kids, or taking big club kids over local kids). It just depends on the Parent and where their kid plays… if their kid plays local and doesn’t start over a big club kid, then we only like big club kids. If the kid is a big club kid who plays behind a local kid, then we are partial to the local club.

This week we got a NASTY email from a Parent whose Son did not make the team he wanted at HS. His email said he did the summer camp, the work outs, and plays for the local club that I coach for, but we humiliated him by putting him on a team with "xxxxxx" kids who are "xxxxxxx". His Son DID go to every workout, he did do camp, etc… and kids who did some of those things made better teams because they are better than him. He is on the right team to develop and earn playing time as hard as it is for the Parents or the kids to hear.
